What is Orienteering?

It's a road rally on foot. It's a treasure hunt in the woods. It's finding your way from one bright colored marker (control point) to another using a map and compass. The topographical map shows trails, roads, open areas, fences, buildings, and more. They all indicate where to find a control point. Orienteering is a special kind of sport that attracts both competitive and recreational participants. Scouts, backpackers, and those who enjoy walking find it good practice in using a map and compass. Some enjoy the competitive side, trying to finish as quickly as possible, testing their endurance as well as their ingenuity. Others like the noncompetitive side of it and use it as an excellent excuse to walk in the woods, content to find all the points while enjoying the beauty of nature. Orienteering challenges the mind and the body. The key is more the ability to make wise decisions rather than the ability to run like a deer. Hence the name, "THE THINKING SPORT". On the course you must make decisions and calculations, i.e. reading the map, recognizing the terrain, and choosing routes.

Welcome to the ARK-LA-TEX Orienteering Society

The Ark-La-Tex Orienteering Society (A.L.T.O.S.) is a non profit club operating under established By Laws and dedicated to the promotion of the sport of Orienteering in the Ark-La-Tex area. Our goal is to provide Orienteering for the young as well as for the not so young. We are headquartered in Shreveport/Bossier City, (Map) Louisiana (USA). The terrain in this area is characterized by wetland areas, rolling hills, erosion features, and clearings. Our meets are conducted in area parks and the Garland Scout Ranch. We used the beautiful forested part of the Barksdale Air Force Base before 9-11 but have not used it since. We are looking forward to being there again - when security concerns permit. The Orienteering season is from September to April although activities are conducted throughout the year. You can check into the Hotel situation by clicking Here. So, if you are looking for a Lifetime Sport, a part time activity that is mentally and physically challenging, or a better way to stay healthy, come try Orienteering. You might just like it.

Little Trolls

The U.S. Orienteering Federation has a program for us kids doing String and White courses. It is called the The Little Troll Program and it has four levels. At each level, you do the appropriate level work. When you finish the level, you receive a sticker to place on a Little Troll card! When the card has the required number of stickers, it is sent to the U.S. Orienteering Federation headquarters for a patch and a new card! For more information please see the Little Trolls section.
